“Father of Russian picture story” Karl Bulla was born in Prussia and came to St. Petersburg at the age of twelve. At first he was a messenger, then an assistant, and then he has opened his own photo studio. Bullа engaged in pavilion shooting, making portraits.
His photo studio had a great success due to the special approach to clients. During the shooting Bullа kept telling jokes and tales so that the atmosphere was relaxed, and the photos were vivid. But by that time Bulla has already dreamed to do what today is called the picture store or photo report. So Bulla has received the permission in the Ministry of Internal Affairs to take photographs on the streets and in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. Bulla has captured a lot of significant events of the city, as well as the scenes from everyday life.
He gained real popularity when his photographs appeared on the pages of the famous Russian magazine “Niva”. The photographer hired agents who looked out for interesting or amusing incidents in the city, and immediately informed him about it.
Bulla had an honor of taking pictures of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Chaliapin, Anna Pavlova, and Sergei Diaghilev. And in 1904 he took a picture of the Emperor Nicholas II. Bullа has become the only photographer in Russia, who had the right to photograph the royal family.
Karl Bulla received a number of awards and he was actively involved in charity work.
Later, he passed the business to his sons and moved to the island of Saaremaa (back then It was called Osel), where he has been capturing the scenes of daily life and traditions of the islanders. Bulla died on the island in 1929.
The heritage of Karl Bulla can be seen at the Hermitage, the Russian National Library and the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg. The great photographer has left more than two hundred thousand negatives of photos, on which you can sight the bygone era.
